Whistleblowing Social Worker Claims Veterans Hospital Falsifying Treatment Wait Times
Social worker and whistleblower Germaine Clarno appears on CBS Morning News.
Social worker Germaine Clarno claims officials at the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital near Chicago put veterans on a secret treatment waiting list in a scheme to collect higher bonuses.
Part of the executive bonuses are based on getting treatment to veterans within 14 days, according to this CBS Morning News report. Clarno claims the secret waiting lists hid the fact many veterans waited much longer for treatment.
“(The practice is) hospital wide,” she said. “We are talking about surgery, radiology, women’s clinic. All those different areas. All the specialities. All the clinics.”
According to CBS similar practices may be occurring at another veterans hospital in Phoenix.
Hospital director Joan Ricard denies the allegations. Auditors have been sent to the hospital to investigate.
Social workers have a long history of notifying the public of alleged wrongdoing in federal and private agencies and helping others do so. National Association of Social Workers member Don Soeken, PhD, has spent 35 years counseling whistleblowers. It is too bad she didn’t speak out 2 years ago. But that would have meant talking to a republican.
There is a special place in he’ll for people who stand by and do nothing while veterans suffer and die.
This woman was union president at the time this happened, not a “social worker”. She had knowledge of the wrongdoings and failed tp speak up even though the union and whistle-blower laws would have protected her job. She failed to speak up because she didn’t want to talk to the Republicans in Congress on the VA committee. She should be charged with negligent homicide in the death of every vet who died waiting for care, along with the VA officials who lined their own pockets.
