The Diana R. Garland School of Social work was closed Tuesday and remains closed today in mourning for the school’s namesake and former dean, Diana R. Garland, who died on Monday night. “She was one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever met,” said Amarillo junior Heath Holland. “She was so excited I chose to be a social work major.”

Earlier this month we launched our first EMPOWERED Families Dinner Series, starting with the third grade classes in Parkview Elementary in Valparaiso. Parents and children were invited to attend a dinner at the school. The gymnasium was transformed with clothed round tables, inviting place settings, and tantalizing food. In addition to being treated to entertainment by their children, the parents were led by Britta Neinast, LCSW, in a discussion about setting boundaries. Parents were invited to share among themselves about what challenges they faced with their children and what was working for them.

Antoinette Rucker was 16 years old and looking forward to moving from a foster care group home to a permanent placement with her older sister. But the process dragged on for almost a year, Rucker said, because the social worker handling her transition went on maternity leave and didn’t come back. That meant Rucker had to get to know a new caseworker, who was learning Rucker’s case at the same time, slowing the process. Altogether, Rucker had three different caseworkers during the transition, she said. “It’s almost like they’re your parent,” Rucker said of case managers. “They take you to the doctor, parent/teacher conferences. So when you have someone that’s starting over consistently, you have to adjust to a new person, and they have to adjust to you.”
