Why Aren’t Americans Rioting?

The BBC asked Gary Bailey, past president of the National Association of Social Workers and current president of the International Federation of Social Workers, why Americans worried about high unemployment and the nation’s economic future are not rioting like the citizens of Great Britain, Greece and other nations.

Bailey said if Congress continues to do steep cuts in programs there could be a backlash.

“We are inevitably at risk,” he said. “We’re not immune to what’s happening in the world. The bigger the city and the larger the youth population, the greater the risk.”

One expert  said despite high unemployment and economic uncertainty life is still “tolerable” in the United States. Another said union members protesting anti-labor legislation in Ohio, Wisconsin and Indiana prove unrest is occurring in the United States, but the media is not adequately covering such events.
