Social Worker Helped Promising Pitcher Beat Addiction

Shaun Garceau

Cheers to Pennsylvania’s York Daily Record for this article that mentions how National Association of Social Workers member Larry Mabry helped baseball pitcher Shaun Garceau beat an oxycodone addiction.

Garceau, 23, had played well with the Palm Beach Cardinals in 2009 but returned to spring training camp addicted to the drug and 40 pounds lighter. A fellow player discovered Garceau taking the drug and Garceau turned himself into the team and said he needed treatment.

With the help of Mabry, a licensed clinical social worker in Palm Beach County, FL, Garceau has been clean since September 2009 and is eager to get his promising baseball career back on track with the York Revolution.

“He’s a very lucky man to beat it, there’s no doubt about it,” Mabry said.

However, Garceau still faces jail time and fraud in Florida for  felony counts of conspiracy to traffic oxycodone and trafficking oxycodone. Garceau, who has cooperated with authorities, said he is willing to pay the price for his actions. His trial is scheduled to begin in October.

Social workers often help clients beat drug, alcohol and other addiction problems. To learn more visit NASW’s “Help Starts Here” consumer Website’s Addictions section by clicking here.
