Michigan Social Workers Protest Layoffs

Social workers for Detroit Public Schools recently protested planned layoffs, saying the budget-cutting move will endanger children, according to an article in The Michigan Citizen. “We believe DPS is putting our children’s lives at risk, compromising their mental health, safety and security,” said Angela Gardner-Street, one of the social workers who may lose her job.

  1. More bad new for the Detroit area. That’s a shame.

  2. With all the unemployment and loss of housing in the Detroit area, who is going to listen to the children who attend school in the Detroit area, if there are no School Social Workers available to do their job. What an injustice.

  3. I think it’s imperative for School Social Workers in Michigan to do some investigating into this matter. Mr. Bobb is praised by many for his reform efforts, but in many cases, to the detriment of student need. I’m not a School Social Worker, but I think since we just passed a proposal on Tuesday to funnel more money into the DPS budget, there ought to be enough money to retain the school social workers. Have they talked to anyone at the Board of Education or Mr. Bobb himself? This is beyond ridiculous!!
