How
Do You Recover From a Blow to Your Self-Esteem?
Psychology Today
When our self-esteem takes
a blow, it can affect everything in our lives, including how we feel
about ourselves, our jobs, our physical appearance, and our mental abilities.
It can even affect how we feel about where we live and what we do for pleasure.

Our
View: Mental health hotline a solid step forward
Gloucester Daily Times
Rebekah Gerwitz, executive director of the Massachusetts chapter of
the National Association of Social Workers, called it “a game changer.” “It’s
truly transformative for our state,” she said. The need for such a program,
developed by the administration of outgoing Gov. Charlie Baker, could not be
more clear. The coronavirus pandemic laid bare — and exacerbated — a national
mental health crisis that shows few signs of abating.

John Poyner will lead the Township Council in 2023 in his new role as
council president. Serving beside him in a leadership role is Councilwoman
Margot Harris as council vice president. The two council members, who have
just completed their first year in office, were elected to the new positions
and sworn in during Wednesday’s Township Council reorganization meeting. Both
Poyner and Harris said they were honored to be selected.
Technology
and Entrepreneurship in Social Work

However, this is not a new concept. Research articles on technology and
entrepreneurship in social work have been published for years, and the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW) has published reports on the need for
technology in social work. Furthermore, universities such as Columbia
University in New York have embraced the movement, and have created a minor for
social workers called “Emerging
Technology, Media, and Society,” which trains social workers to understand
the latest developments in the world of technology.

Ban

The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy group, calls conversion
therapy, also known as “reparative therapy,” “dangerous and discredited” and
rejected by mainstream medical and mental health organizations for decades.
Both the American Psychological Association and American Medical Association
have also denounced conversion therapy. “Conversion therapy is a horrible,
harmful practice,” said Marc Herstand, executive director of the Wisconsin
chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. “Every mental health
and medical health profession has condemned it. It causes a terrible impact on
LBGTQ youth, serious mental health issues, suicidality.”

Maryland
fails to provide for troubled youths in state custody
Baltimore Sun
Wes Moore is inheriting a serious crisis the Hogan administration failed to
address. We are neglecting children and youth who have high-intensity
behavioral health needs because of insufficient therapeutic residential care
options. Many in foster care are relegated to boarding for weeks or months in
emergency rooms or to living in short-term psychiatric hospital wards with no
end in sight because of the shortage.

If
You’re Gay, Should You See a Gay Therapist?
Psychology Today
As a therapist, I’m often hearing certain particular questions from
clients and potential clients alike—as a gay man, should I be seeing a gay
therapist? Does it matter? What makes the most sense for me? It’s worth
talking about these questions now, as so many people decide as part of their
New Year’s resolutions to start therapy. How do they choose?

Divorcing A
Narcissist Starts With Changing You, Not Them
Scary Mommy
Laura
Reagan, a licensed clinical social worker, integrative trauma therapist,
and host of the Therapy Chat Podcast, says the first step is realizing
you’ll need help. “The key to escaping a relationship with narcissistic
abuse is to understand that you can’t change your partner, but you can change
yourself,” Reagan tells Scary Mommy. “Find a therapist who
specializes in narcissistic abuse, attachment trauma, codependency, and/or
intimate partner violence to develop a sense of empowerment and reconnection to
your own wants and needs.”
