Movie to Watch: “Oranges and Sunshine”

“Oranges and Sunshine” starring critically acclaimed British actress Emily Watson is just beginning to make the film festival circuit.

Emily Watson stars as social worker Margaret Humphreys in "Oranges and Sunshine."

However it is a movie social workers should pay close attention to.

In the film Watson portrays Margaret Humphreys, a British social worker who disclosed the government sent thousands of children in foster care to Australia, Zimbabwe and other British commonwealth countries without permission of their parents between 1930 and 1970.

Many of these children ended up being abused physically and sexually. Some were falsely told their parents were dead and that they would get plenty of “oranges and sunshine” if they agreed to leave the country.

  1. What a difficult question…maybe there could be a series/movie/documentary about social workers and what they actually accomplish in an 8 hour day at work. I am sure many would actually cry watching.

  2. Jane Addams is an untold story to this generation. As a proud graduate of the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the U of I at Chicago, I am aware that she was a rebel and Nobel Peace Prize winner before her time. She was willing to look at her own changed attitudes (“20 years at Hull House”) about blaming the poor versus becoming their advocate. In the current political climate, I would think she is well worth the look.
