Social Worker as Action Hero?
In “The Gateway” actor Shea Wigham portrays Parker Joe, a former professional fighter who becomes a state social worker.
Parker is assigned to assist a troubled Dahlia (Olivia Munn), who is struggling to raise her daughter Ashley while her husband is in prison. He develops a perhaps too-close relationship with his clients, even driving Ashley (Taegen Burns) to school when her mother is intoxicated.
But when her husband Mike (Zach Avery) is released on parole he quickly goes back to a life of crime.
This spells trouble for Dahlia, who had previously lost custody of Ashley because of her husband’s involvement in organized crime. And Mike soon falls back into being abusive toward his wife and child and using his daughter as a drug courier. However Parker, who is no longer under government authority after he was fired for hitting a coworker, gets involved in the situation.
This is not the first film about a social worker gone violent. The 2011 film “The Vigilante” social worker David Harris (portrayed by Martin Sheen’s brother Joe Estevez) thinks the system is not working fast enough to protect children so he takes justice into his own hands.
