Wisconsin Social Worker Honored for Work with Former Inmates
Cheers to htrnews.com in Wisconsin for this article about retired social worker Darlene Wellner.
The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin honored Wellner with their Meg McLane Award for her “advocacy for the rights of people who are incarcerated or reintegrating into society following prison.”
Wellner, 71, works with the Salvation Army-sponsored Prison Aftercare Program “Circle of Hope.” The program is aimed at helping former inmates get housing assistance, jobs, drug counseling, and other support they need so they will not reoffend and go back to prison.
“What touched me was her compassion — she gives me good positive feedback when I do good things,” said former inmate Rickey Hauke.
