Last month in the SocialWorkersSpeak.org Jeers section we alerted you to an Epoch Times article about jewelry maker Erica Levine, who left social work to pursue a full-time career in art.

The article said Levine studied “of all things, social work” in college, as if being a social worker is incompatible with being artistic.

One of our readers, Laura-Alexis Harvey, contacted the Epoch Times, about the slight to the profession. To their credit the newspaper edited the online article to take out comments that were offensive to social workers.

Here is the response Harvey received from former Epoch Times Style Editor Diana Mathias.

“Thank you for your feedback. We made the correction. I agree that the social worker career demands a lot of creativity as much as any artistic field does, and in fact I think you have to have a much bigger heart and a love of people to do your work. It is from feedback such as this that we realize our lack of understanding and we have a chance to make our writing better.”
