USC Taking Graduate Program to the Web

Cheers to Inside Higher Ed for this article on the University of Southern California School of Social Work  taking its master’s degree program online.

A social work degree is difficult to earn online because students need one-on-one mentoring and practical field work experience. Try doing that in front of a computer.

However, USC teamed with the 2Tor company to create a “Virtual Academic Center.” The program allows synchronicity between instructors and students and among students themselves. 2Tor also finds real-life places for students to do fieldwork no matter where they are located.

“This will allow us to become a national school of social work, making our program available to a new pool of students at the same level of quality,” said R. Paul Maiden, vice dean for academic and student affairs at the USC social work school.

  1. A great option for those of us who cannot afford to leave work to complete a f-t-f program. USC is one of the best school’s , so of course this program should be nothing less.

  2. Does anyone know if this program is totally online with no residency, and do you have to live in CA to access it? Is all classwork online and acessible from anywhere in US on the Internet?

  3. Hi Sharon,

I’m the director of marketing communications for the USC School of Social Work. To answer your questions, the MSW@USC program is completely online and accessible from anywhere in the United States. You do not have to live in California. Field internships will be arranged for students in their city of residence.

    Thanks for your interest!

  4. Is this program available for students outside the U.S?

  5. Steph:

Please contact Cindy Monticue at USC with that question. Her email is monticue@usc.edu.
