Social worker Erin Merryn has been named one of Glamour Magazine‘s Women of the Year 2012 for her work on behalf of other victims of sexual abuse.

Merryn was abused by a relative and family friend as a child. After a suicide attempt she realized she did nothing wrong and began to open up about her trauma.

While  a senior in high school Merryn published a book called “Stolen Innocence” and began publicly speaking about her experiences. Later she lobbied for successful passage of Erin’s Law in Illinois.

That law  encourages schools to educate children about sexual abuse prevention. Merryn now wants the law passed in all 50 states.

“Think of how many kids could have been saved from monsters like Jerry Sandusky if they’d had the tools to speak up,” she said. “I want that second-grader to tell her mom what happened at the sleepover, not wait until she’s 30 to break her silence.”

Cheers to Glamour Magazine for highlighting Merryn’s work.
