Social Worker Review: “Life As We Know It” Did Not Portray Profession Well But Made Good Points

Life As We Know It
Category: Comedy/Drama

Review by Teresa Wall

RATING (Out of 5 SocialWorkersSpeak.org Megaphones):

Plot:  Two single adults (Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel) find themselves attempting to be proper caregivers to an infant after their best friends are suddenly killed in an accident. Neither adult likes the other one so when they are thrown together under one roof  it makes for some interesting situations.

Why social workers and the public should watch: I have to admit that I laughed hard watching this movie; however, it did not portray social workers favorably. Granted this was a comedy, but the underlying message was do not trust the social worker. In the end, it portrayed the social worker being the weaker of the two in one of the scenes and the client as being the strong one — I do not want to give away the plot. On a good note, it did portray the social worker with a backbone and willingness to give the caregivers time to adjust to their new situation as a cohesive family unit, while keeping the infant’s needs in mind (Chanta Rivers was cast as the social worker/child protective servicers worker in the movie). Overall, I say watch it and enjoy it! I give it a four SocialWorkersSpeak.org megaphones for nonchalantly busting on social workers!
