Cheers to the Jerusalem Post magazine for running the short story “The Old Couple” about an American social worker in Israel who must help an elderly husband and wife resolve marital strife. However, the social worker soon discovers nothing is as it seems.

Here’s an excerpt:

“How interesting fate was. This colorful old Romanian Jew, after having lived so long and seen so much, all of a sudden walks into my office and places his lifelong marriage and remaining years in my hands. Was it only because I was the social worker for the aged in his district? Could fate be so arbitrarily decided by something so mundane as the municipal bureaucracy?

The story is by Mordechai Kramer, a writer who grew up in Philadelphia and later emigrated to Israel. At one time Kramer was a social worker.
