Mugged Social Worker Befriends Robber

Cheers to NPR for this article on New York City social worker Julio Diaz.

Diaz was on the subway on his way to his favorite diner after work when a teenager robbed him at knifepoint. Instead of fighting back Diaz offered the teenager his coat and then invited him to dinner.

“If you’re willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money,” Diaz told him. “I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me … hey, you’re more than welcome.”

Diaz also recorded what happened for StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization that lets Americans tell their everyday life stories. To listen to the inspiring account of what happened after Diaz took the robber to dinner, click here.

Q: Social workers, would you have done what Diaz did?
