Sheen to Work on New Sitcom, But Social Work Role Uncertain

Charlie Sheen

Actor Charlie Sheen today officially announced he will star in Anger Management, a new television sitcom based on a 2003 hit comedy film of the same name, according to a press release.

However, it is uncertain whether Sheen will play a social worker on the series, Lionsgate Television spokeswoman Leah Krantzler told SocialWorkersSpeak.org. Lionsgate Television, one of the producers of the series.

“It’s very, very early into this,” said Krantzler, explaining that producers and writers have not worked out plot details and what profession Sheen will portray. It is also unknown which network will pick up the series, she said.

According to previous news reports Sheen would play a master’s degree social worker helping criminal defendants with anger issues. However, Sheen would end up often making his clients angrier, news reports said.

“I chose Anger Management because, while it might be a stretch for me to play a guy with serious anger management issues I think it is a great concept,” Sheen said in today’s press release. “It also provides me with real ownership in the series, a certain amount of creative control and the chance to be back in business with one of my favorite producers of all time, Joe Roth.”

Sheen has battled drug and alcohol problems. Those issues prompted CBS and Warner Bros. earlier this year to boot Sheen from the popular sitcom Two and a Half Men.

Sheen will retain a significant ownership stake in the Anger Management series, the press release said. It will also give him a chance to partner again with producer Joe Roth, who has worked with Sheen on the films Major League, Young Guns and the Three Musketeers.

Lionsgate-owned Debmar-Mercury will distribute the series. Besides Roth and Lionsgate Televison, the Anger Management sitcom will also be produced by Revolution Studio’s Vince Totino, Robert Maron, and Evolution Management, the production company of Sheen’s manager Mark Burg.

“We have been fielding numerous offers for Charlie since his departure from Two and a Half Men, but none were as creatively and financially compelling as the package that Lionsgate, Debmar-Mercury, and Revolution presented us with Anger Management,” Burg said.

  1. While not all social workers are healthy everyday the connection between Sheen and social work is a problem. What happened to Blair Underwood? Social Workers deserve a respected person to tell their story.

  2. Indeed…is this a joke? I think Sheen actually believes he does *not* have an anger management problem himself…this story almost seems like it was ripped from The Onion. I wonder how long it will last anyway, before Sheen gets a god-complex and tries to levitate off-set?

  3. The premise sounds hilarious. I remember back when I left my job as a cook to teach Anger Management post BA pre MSW, my coworker said to me, “how are you going to teach anger management? You are the angriest MFer I know.”

  4. Charlie Sheen is an actor. Get over it. I look forward to checking it out. Sounds funny.

  5. Are you kidding me? Charlie Sheen portraying a social worker?? That makes no sense, and it would serve to further the stereotype of social workers on TV..Remember that sitcom with Norm McDonald??? I think it would not be a positive reflection on our profession, to say the least

  6. Oh hecckkk noo! I’m a master’s degree social worker & I am offended at the thought of a client like Sheen mocking or portraying a social worker. Lets have more respect for our profession.
