Don’t Spank Your Kids, Says 50 Years of Research
US News & World Report
“The upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children. Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do,” explained associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and study co-author Andrew Grogan-Kaylor in the release. In fact, the study revealed that spanking and physical abuse were associated with the same negative outcomes.

CDC advisory council brainstorms ways to assess available programs
Delaware Public Media
“It comes with an evaluation component so that individuals using the program can pre-test the kids to look at their behaviors, their attitudes about themselves, their attitudes about others who are different, give them the program and then test them again,” said Marlene Saunders, Executive Director of the Delaware Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Saunders, along with several others, led the universal work group. The group says it now needs to assess the availability and access of the programs identified, and what happened to ones that disappeared.

Committee listens to property tax reform suggestions
The Shorthorn (UTA, TX)
Constance Siegel, social work graduate student, was one of many who showed up to testify in front of the committee, she said. Siegel, representing the National Association of Social Workers, argued that there is a feasible way to bring billions of dollars into the Texas economy, she said. By expanding Medicaid, the government can alleviate the tax burden on citizens, Siegel said. “When we expand Medicaid, we bring in federal tax dollars of $3 billion a year,” she said. Instead, Texas has refused to expand Medicaid through President Barack Obama’s health care law, Siegel said. When the state declined expanding the program, it lost federal tax dollars which could have alleviated tax burdens without eliminating quality government services, she said.

Terminating Parental Rights: State Policies Vary Widely
ABC News
Critics of the Texas system say it is sometimes too quick to conclude that adoption is the best outcome for a child, and doesn’t give biological parents an adequate chance to address problems so their child could stay with them. “We give up on parents very quickly in Texas,” said Will Francis, government relations director at the Texas chapter of National Association of Social Workers. “We believe adoptions are much more of a cure-all than they really are.”

Denying Transgender People Bathroom Access Is Linked to Suicide
Newsweek
Study author Kristie Seelman, an assistant professor in the schools of social work and policy studies at Georgia State University, says that while she decided to focus on restroom access on campuses, her findings are likely just as relevant off-campus. “What people have said when I’ve done interviews with trans folks is that this is an issue that occurs across their life, not just in a college setting,” Seelman says. “There’s a lot of anxiety and stress about finding bathrooms where they won’t encounter harassment or questioning by people, let alone assault or being thrown out. It’s something that consistently is on their minds and creates a lot of distress in their day-to-day lives.”
