The Western Michigan University and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School are offering dual degrees in law in social work, according to this MLive.com article.

Students will be able to earn a master’s degree in social work and a juris doctor degree at the same time.

Administrators said a dual law/social work degree is a great fit because lawyers often  have to work with clients who are prison inmates, in foster care, or are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction.

“There’s a benefit from having a social-work background,” said Tracey Brame, an assistant dean at Cooley. “Clients have needs that go beyond the scope of law.”

Q: What major besides law would be a good degree to pair with social work?

  2. Public Health or Nursing.

  3. University of Maryland at Baltimore has been doing this for years.

  4. I am a graduate of sociology,University of jos, nigeria. I obtained a diploma cert.in social work for development(from same institu.), a masters degree(in view) in peace and conflict resolution(NOUN),a staff of Nigerian prisons service. What profesional course there is for me? Thank you.

  5. The political climate in the small towns where many social workers live provide merit for combining the two degrees. Social Workers opinions and assessments are frequently usurped for political reasons and may be less disastrous for our clients if social workers have a legal background to supplement with their knowledge and professional assessments. Frequently second-guessed for financial reasons. Less desire to serve some populations, unfortunately.

The poor and people with less personal and political power continue to be raped of their rights
