National Association of Social Workers member Jennifer Steinmeier and her husband applied to be adoptive parents through the Bethany Christian Services in Pensacola, Fla.

However, the organization turned the couple down because the couple’s church has a religious doctrine that differed from that organization, this article on NWFDailyNews.com said.

“It’s so sad to think there’s so many children out there who need a home and we’re ready,” Jennifer Steinmeier, MSW, said. “As a social worker I don’t feel like they should be able to discriminate against anyone as adoptive parents because of our religion.”

The Steinmeiers said they will continue to try to adopt.
