CLEVELAND — Through budget cuts, the Cleveland School District has cut nurses and eliminated social workers all together. For nearly 40,000 students, there are only 24 school nurses, and most of those are stationed at schools with children who have major medical needs.

I currently teach at The Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College located in New York City. Most of the students I teach are working on a masters’ degree and came to social work school to be clinicians. I am still close to people I trained with on my social work course. We’ve travelled down very different professional paths and had very different lives along the way, but the support we’ve given each other through treading a common path has been a valuable strength through the good, bad and wobbly periods.
