Cleveland: Lack of nurses, social workers in schools [Video]

CLEVELAND — Through budget cuts, the Cleveland School District has cut nurses and eliminated social workers all together. For nearly 40,000 students, there are only 24 school nurses, and most of those are stationed at schools with children who have major medical needs.

NASW MA Chapter is the largest social work organization in the state with 8,400 social worker members. “I’m proud to once again be endorsed by NASW MA PACE in my campaign for state Senate,” said Eldridge, D-Acton, who represents Hudson. “I was also thrilled to receive the 2011 Public Elected Official of the Year award from the National NASW organization for my work on issues that are critical to the needs of families. It’s an honor to have the support of NASW and many of its members in the Middlesex & Worcester District.”

I currently teach at The Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College located in New York City. Most of the students I teach are working on a masters’ degree and came to social work school to be clinicians. That is, once they graduate, they’d like to work with clients to help them deal with depression, bereavement, stress, and other maladies of living in the modern or, perhaps, post-modern world.

I am still close to people I trained with on my social work course. We’ve travelled down very different professional paths and had very different lives along the way, but the support we’ve given each other through treading a common path has been a valuable strength through the good, bad and wobbly periods.
