Self-sufficiency out of reach for many working families in SC
The State (Columbia, SC)
For a single adult with a preschooler and a school-aged child in Richland County, the self-sufficiency standard is $41,861 per year, or $19.82 hourly. That’s nearly three times the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour and more than twice the federal poverty level for a family of three. “We have this myth of the welfare family,” said Kirk Foster, an assistant professor of social work at the University of South Carolina. “The reality is that many of these families have to work extra hard to make ends meet. Even though you may be receiving some kind of federal or state benefits, you still have a lot of work to do.”

Confronting Suicide in the Veterinary Community
Veterinary Practice News
In 2002, Michael Blackwell, DVM, MPH, then-dean of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, urged the hiring of a psychiatric social worker to work with students and teaching hospital clients, said Elizabeth Strand, LCSW, Ph.D. “We got together and envisioned what a program would look like, and the mission became much broader, aimed at the intersection of veterinary school and practice, and the human needs that would arise,” said Strand, director of veterinary social work and clinical associate professor. Her position is a joint appointment of the Colleges of Social Work and Veterinary Medicine.

Social workers urge N.Y. to require licenses for its mental health providers
The Albany Times Union
If you are being treated for depression or bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, private health insurance will cover it only if your mental health practitioner is licensed. But if you are being treated through a state agency, the professional seeing you does not have to be licensed.… “This practice is discriminatory and dangerous, and it disproportionately impacts poor and minority communities,” said Ron Bunce, executive director of the New York State Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
The case for school social workers
Whitman Hanson Express (MA)
Why does the W-H Regional School District need social workers? School Committee Chairman Bob Hayes said it’s a question he frequently hears. “We have seen over time an increase in the number of low-income students and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ruth Gilbert-Whitner. “We’ve seen increased numbers of students from families that are not functioning in ways that really support students. Students are coming to school with issues and problems that 20 to 25 years ago we would have never thought possible.”

March is National Social Work Month—a time of reflection, education and involvement. For organizations like The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), it is a time to celebrate the work and contributions all around the nation. NASW, founded in 1955, is the combination of seven different organizations that work in the discipline. Since its founding, NASW has done much to contribute to the recognition of those involved in social work from the college level to the professional world. As a part of National Social Work Month, and in partnership with the NASW, APU’s social work program is featuring a number of events, programs and information sessions to promote both the social work program and current social issues.
Why Social Workers Are Amazing
The Huffington Post
March is National Social Work month, and it is important that we take the time to appreciate all that they do in our local communities on a daily basis. There are more than 600,000 social workers in the United States. Social workers have an incredibly stressful & exhausting job. It can be physically taxing & emotionally draining with long, odd hours. Very few people understand what it takes to be a social worker & do these incredible things on a daily basis without the reward of money or recognition.

Thank a Clinical Social Worker Today
Pallimed (hospice and palliative care blog)
March is Social Work Month – a great excuse to take a moment and celebrate the work that clinical social workers do in palliative care. But, hang on, perhaps we should be doing more than that. Can we adjust our lens settings and challenge ourselves to see clinical social work differently? Palliative Care is a team sport; the standard model of practice includes an MD, NP and CSW. My challenge to all of you would be to make sure you are all equal partners in our unequal medical world.
Forging Solutions Out of Challenges: Why Social Workers Are an Essential Part of Effective Home Care
The Huffington Post
In addition to being the month in which we turn ahead the clocks, welcome spring, and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March is also National Social Work Month. This year’s theme, “Forging Solutions Out of Challenges,” brilliantly summarizes the impact that social workers are having on people’s lives every day, across our nation. While many Americans may associate the social work profession with efforts to support struggling families, or with the thousands of practitioners who have earned social work degrees on the way to becoming psychotherapists, it’s important to note that social workers also play a critical role in home health care organizations like the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, where I work.
