The second act: Seniors shelve retirement, extend careers

As a senior issues advocate, a licensed clinical social worker and a longtime college professor, David B. Saltman has a unique perspective on seniors’ changing place in the workforce. At 71, he also knows why he returned to a second career several years ago – after a 20-year hiatus from teaching – as a visiting professor in the graduate school at Florida International University.

The bill here is supported by some two dozen organizations, including the New Jersey State Nurses Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, and Trenton’s Rescue Mission. In 2008, the U.S. Conference of Mayors urged the states to enact such laws as part of a wider strategy against drug overdoses.

The Sheridan VA Medical Center employs 23 social workers. John Slaughter is social work executive at the VA; he says a common misconception is that social workers just work with children.

“People stop by and say, ‘Thank you for helping my dad or sister,’” said Becky Catron, social worker at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System. “Sometimes, we forget that we have an impact on people’s lives.” In honor of those social workers, the VA will commemorate National Social Work Month with various events.
