Professional social workers play a critical role in nationwide efforts to support American troops and their families. On Wednesday, July 25, 2012, Dr. Jill Biden will join the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) at their national practice conference, Restoring Hope: The Power of Social Work, to announce a new professional initiative aimed at educating all social workers—regardless of practice area or focus—on the challenges facing the nation’s veterans and military families. Dr. Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, military mom and lifelong educator, started Joining Forces with First Lady Michelle Obama last year to encourage all Americans to support and honor our veterans and military families in their own communities.

Lesbian-directed film part of conference: The National Association of Social Workers is holding a National Hope Conference including a film festival on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Wardman Park (2660 Woodley Road N.W.). The three films included in the festival are “Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution” by lesbian filmmaker Lucy Winer, “From Place to Place” by Paige Williams and Matt Anderson and “What Love Is: Pathfinders” by Ted Bogosian.

She worked as the Aberdeen Public School District’s lone social worker for 14 years and retired at the end the school year. The district will now operate without a district social worker due to a combination of reduced state funding levels and the absence of grant funding.

The School of Social Work will offer new coursework in the fall for military social work. “There is a short staff on social workers trained on mental health, military culture and an understanding of military families,” said Alexa Smith-Osborne, social work dean and principle investigator of the Student and Veteran Project.
