National Association of Social Workers Fostering, Adoption Resources
The National Association of Social Workers is pleased to be a resource on FosterMore.org. We also urge you to watch “The Fosters,” and ABC Family show that is centered on a family with foster children.
Social workers perform the complicated and delicate task of finding foster homes for children when their birth families are no longer able to care for them.
Social Workers also play a vital role in creating new families through adoption.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and its HelpStartsHere.org consumer website and SocialWorkersSpeak.org media industry outreach websites offer a wealth of information on foster care and adoption:
- Help Starts Here overview of the adoption and foster care processes.
- Adoption and Foster Care tip sheets.
- Online adoption and foster care resources.
- A Help Starts Here article describing how social workers help in the adoption process.
- Information on current trends in adoptions, including adoptions by gay and lesbian adults and couples and trans-racial adoptions.
- NASW’s policy statement on adoptions and foster care.
- An article on “From Place to Place,” a documentary on foster children who age out of the social services system without family support. This film, which won a 2012 NASW Media Award, is available for purchase and screenings.
