Therapeutic Music Soothes

English playwright and poet William Congreve was right in 1697 when he wrote: “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast.”

More than 300 years later social workers are using therapeutic music to help people in nursing homes, hospitals and hospices. Music can lessen feelings of depression, pain, insomnia, loneliness, boredom, fear and anxiety in patients.

To learn more read this article about National Association of Social Workers member Linda May Grobman, MSW, LSW, in Pennsylvania’s Harrisburg Patriot-News. Grobman, who is a certified music practioner and flutist with the Central Pennsylvania Symphony, offers her services to the Jewish Home in Susquehanna Township once a month.

“Anything that benefits the residents is good,” said Jessica Finkenbinder, the home’s recreation director. “Residents can enjoy music in any stage of life. It’s beneficial, whatever their mood or problems.”

Thanks for alerting SocialWorkersSpeak.org’s Media Watch about the article on your great work, Ms. Grobman!
