Michael Schwass was one of Illinois’ top prep hockey players until he was injured during a game, becoming a paraplegic.

That didn’t stop Schwass, according to this obituary in the Daily Herald. He earned a master’s degree in social work and created a private practice to help disabled and able-bodied clients.

Schwass also became and author and motivational speaker.

He died on Friday at age 51 from cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart wall.

“He had such a positive message about meeting challenges, and that it was how you cope with those challenges that speaks to your character,” former teacher Jim Sorensen said about Schwass’ speeches to students. “He really personified hope to the kids.”
