In Memory: Lynn Mintz

National Association of Social Workers member Lynn Mintz lost her 10-year-old daughter Rebecca in 1984 when the child was hit by a car while riding her bicycle. Rebecca was not wearing a helmet.

Although still grieving Mintz and her husband Sanford campaigned for bicycle safety laws so other parents would not have to go through the same ordeal, according to this obituary in the Miami Herald.

They organized bicycle rodeos, helped bring bike-safety classes to school and lobbied for a Florida law that made it mandatory for children under age 16 to wear helmets while riding bicycles.

Mintz, MSW, also became a specialist in counseling sexual abuse victims, including children.

Lynn Mintz died a day after her birthday on June 6 from cancer that had been in remission for 13 years before returning in 2002. She leaves her husband Sanford, daughter Rachel, son Jeremy, and granddaughter Simone.

We offer our sympathies to her family.

  1. Hello, my name is Yvette Ramos formerly known to Lynn as Yvette Govender. She was my therapist for many years in Miami. I am a survivor of child sex abuse and Lynn helped me develope coping skill, helped me realize my former codependent and abusive relationships, and she helped me greatly to be more independent with a new way of seeing and experiencing life, she gave me hope and aspirations for a happy future! She gave me the tools I needed to face every obstacle and approach relationships with more healthy expectations! Lynn was a powerful influence in my life, I moved away to Orlando and always thought of her often. Today I had intentions of letting her know how much she meant to me and it has broken my heart to know if she has passed away. So to the surviving family my condolences… Lynn will always have a special place in my heart! She was an amazing woman with a great big beautiful heart!
