Kansas passed a new law requiring social workers take personal safety training.

  1. I think that we should have some kind of workshop to continue our awareness for our safety. Sometimes, we get caught up in helping folks and may forget about our safety. I am speaking for myself in that I work in an environment where people have been hurt by patients. We need to constantly be reminded that your safety comes first. Nothing is full proof, but having workshops could be beneficial. We live in a world where we can’t always predict what happens no matter what line of work you are practicing, but sometimes there could be red flags to look out for. Also, maybe using the buddy system when going on home visits or something. When I worked in Child Protective Services we would do that sometimes.

  2. I do not think it needs to be required, but it is important to always think about our safety first. It doesn’t matter if you are in private practice or doing home visit to clients’ homes. I am a mental health therapist working in a gang territory and my safety is always a concern. I make sure I am aware of my surroundings whether I am inside my office with a client or walking to my car. If a personal safety class will help you think what safety measures to take in different situations then it should be taken but not mandatory.

  3. my parents can no longer afford to deal with my mentally ill butt, at age 40. my parents want me out of their lives now, at age 40. can you all help me please?! help me with life basics like low income housing, if you all have any, please?! and thank you! 🙂 I am going to need help with low income housing the most, if you all have any low income housing help.

Please tell us what state you live in. I could refer you to a state NASW chapter for additional information.
