  1. A few years ago, I sent Harpo Studios a social work resume. It was my feeling that social work could help out the staff at Harpo by processing some of the feelings that must come up when they are working on a story that is heavily emotional.
When a person deals with sadness and overwhelming life stories of illness and abuse it can take an emotional toll on them. This can be referred to as Secondary Post Traumatic Stress or Compassion Fatigue.
Needless to say I was sent a letter stating that there was no need for someone with my background at Harpo, which is more than I expected. I suppose Harpo has an EAP that deals with employee situations when they get overwhelming. My wish was to avoid the need for EAP intervention.
It is my opinion that news networks would do well to have sessions with a social worker on regular schedule as on a daily basis they are subject to a variety of stresses in reporting the news to all of us. At least we can shut the television or radio off when it gets to overwhelming.
