Canadian social worker Bill Tingley read news articles that identified two people as social workers who were not registered to practice in Saskatchewan Province.

So Tingley, who is registrar of the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers, fired this letter off to the editor of the Star Phoenix in Saskatoon.

Here’s an excerpt of his letter:

“Neither (Kellie) Wuttunee nor (Candice) Plamondon are registered members of the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers (SASW). While the designation of ‘family service worker’ is appropriate, I must point out that referring to either person as a social worker is not appropriate and contravenes Sec. 24 of the Social Workers Act, which states that no person other than a member shall engage in the practice of social work by using the title ‘social worker.'”

SocialWorkersSpeak.org thinks American social workers should follow Tingley’s example. If you see or read a news item that identifies someone as a social worker who does not qualify to be one in your state, don’t hesitate to fire off a letter to the editor or TV producer. In fact, we can help you find the right person to contact.
