Standing around the very patch of grass where she took her last breaths, family and friends of Ashley Qualls gathered Wednesday to commemorate the one-year anniversary of her unsolved murder. “No one deserves to be forgotten,” said Nadine Wu, a Mid-City resident and social worker who met Qualls at Tulane University. “We tell her story so she lives on.”…  In the wee hours of July 9, 2013, the 25-year-old South Carolina native had just started the 3.5-mile walk from her job at Odyssey House substance abuse treatment center in Treme to her Uptown home.

University of Arizona South students Beatriz Greeno and Juan Andres Espinoza have been selected for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s Congressional Internship Program.… Espinoza – a Cochise College transfer student now studying applied sciences and human services – said he intends to use that knowledge to inform his studies and future career as a social worker. “There are people who need a lot of help in my community, so I want to start with the community that helped me to grow and gave me support.”

These four licensed clinical social workers are busy providing counseling to elderly individuals and couples along with eldercare counseling to family caregivers. When Sussanne Martin MSW ’14 was 4 years old, her father, a well-known lawyer who fought for human rights and social justice in El Salvador, was kidnapped and killed during the country’s civil war. Armed with a desire to continue her father’s legacy and his dream of a more egalitarian El Salvador, she earned a master’s degree at the USC School of Social Work, hoping the experience would enlighten her about the finer points of nonprofit management. Now, with diploma in hand, Martin has started an organization to facilitate positive community outreach, using her newfound advocacy skills to make a difference in her home country.
