Indiana drug courts focus more on treatment, less on punishment

Kevin Groves, director of the Drunk Driving and Drug Court in Warrick County in Indiana, has skills and experiences to help people who come before the court for drunk driving and drug abuse offenses, according to this article in the Evansville Courier Press.

Groves battled drug addiction and is also licensed social worker. He is part of a push in Indiana to get people with drug and alcohol problems to get more clinical treatment and less jail time.

“We have had a successful program, and I think it is because it is clinically based,” Warrick County Superior Court Judge Keith Meier said.

Indiana has 31 drug courts.  The courts divert nonviolent, substance abusing offenders from jail or prison into programs supervised by a judge. A 2007 evaluation of five Indiana drug courts found they reduced incidents of re-offending by up to 50 percent.
