In Memory: Sandra Mills

National Association of Social Workers member Dr. Sandra J. Mills died on Nov. 27 from cancer,  this obituary in the Mendota Reporter said.

Mills, MSW, was a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois – Springfield. She taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels in the Child Family and Community Services and the Social Work programs.

Mills was department chair in 2003 and 2004 and taught and developed an internship for students in Romania in 2001 and 2004. More recently Mills was given a Lifetime Achievement Award in Social Work from NASW’s Illinois Chapter.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Joseph Mills, daughter Lisa Stewart and son Aaron Mills.

  1. Sandra was one of the most level headed social workers I have ever met. Her joyfulness and wisdom will be sorely missed. It was a pleasure to renew contacts during the various annual conferences we would attend through the years. Reminiscing about IASSW history and the days we shared at the Board were precious moments. Her tireless work on behalf of IASSW and NASW will forever be appreciated. We have indeed lost a true social worker and a distinguished professional.
