Beijing Rushing to Certify Social Workers

Most social workers in Beijing are volunteers and the city is pushing to increase the number of certified social workers, according to this article in China Daily.

Only 4,235 of the city’s more than 30,000 social workers — or 14 percent — are certified, the article said. The city government wants to boost this number to 30 percent by 2020, the article said.

Chinese rapid economic growth and the social ills that have accompanies this boom have increased the demand for social workers. China did not have social workers  until the 1980s and regulations for the professions were not set until 2006.

  1. I’m glad that social work is becoming a more respected profession in China, which is almost a surprise given popular “Tiger Pareting” practices that seem to look down on lower paying/less prestigious jobs. As soon as more people start realizing that social workers are more than just people who didn’t do well enough in school to go into law, medicine, or business, the better off the profession will be. Glad to see this upturn in China!
