The Building Capacity in Military-Connected Schools project has received a 2014 Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award. The project, a partnership between the USC School of Social Work and eight public school districts in San Diego and Riverside counties, strives to create sustainable models of supportive schools. Given by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC), the award was presented at this year’s National Training Seminar in Washington, D.C. The honor recognizes outstanding teacher preparation programs and celebrates collaboration among higher education institutions, public school districts and military installations. Accepting the award on behalf of the Building Capacity Consortium were Ron Avi Astor, who has joint appointments at the School of Social Work and the USC Rossier School of Education, and Monica Esqueda, a doctoral candidate at USC Rossier, among other officials.

Marcie Dimenstein, a licensed social worker at The Connection, a non-profit agency providing community based services, said, “Someone who is very depressed has the same lack of hormones that are being produced by the brain and as addiction so they are both interchangeable.” Dimenstein added that people like Carlos need a strong support system, to help draw out well hidden raw feelings.

The unit will stop for the day at American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars clubs at five sites – Brockport; Naples in Ontario County; Wolcott in Wayne County; Groveland in Livingston County; and either Waterloo or Seneca Falls in Seneca County, said VA Rural Health Social Worker Angela Allen. The unit will hold open houses in each location to showcase the unit, answer questions and enroll veterans in the veteran’s healthcare system before the RV becomes fully operational.

More than two dozen suspicious fires have been set in three counties this summer and investigators have only made an arrest in one of the cases. The fires were set at homes and other buildings in Orlando, Sanford and, just this week, Daytona Beach. Part of the investigation is figuring out why someone would set a fire intentionally. Dana West is a licensed clinical social worker at Total Life Counseling. West studied this type of behavior and said setting fires can be a form of release for someone who is struggling. “Behind those kind of behaviors is usually a lot of anger, pain and sadness,” said West.
