CEOs from Largest U.S.-Based Global NGO Alliance Call for Immediate, Unfettered Humanitarian Access in Syria

Fifty-two CEOs of major international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) [including the National Association of Social Workers] have signed on to a statement calling on all parties to the Syrian conflict to “immediately allow and facilitate unfettered humanitarian access throughout Syria” in response to what has become the biggest humanitarian crisis of our day. The statement was organized by InterAction – the largest alliance of U.S.-based global humanitarian and development NGOs.

Things I Wish I Was told in Graduate School

I wish I was told in Graduate school and even in undergrad to some extent the real meaning of getting a college degree. I was told it meant; opportunity, a big salary, not working in food service and autonomy. While much of that is true to some extent, I have learned there is larger picture as well. I am just speaking from my experience, and I hope this falls in line with the general consensus.

The symposium will focus on the theme “Austerity Hurts: When a City No Longer Provides Services for its Citizens.” The symposium will be held in Room 263 of the Priory Campus from 9 a.m. to noon.

UW launches center in geriatric social work

The UW’s School of Social Work launched a new center — the Healthy Generations Hartford Center of Excellence in Geriatric Social Work — with a public lecture Feb. 27. Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen, a UW professor of social work, will be directing the new center. Fredriksen-Goldsen is also director of the Institute for Multigenerational Health where she researches the intersection of health disparities, aging, and caregiving in marginalized communities.

St.Thomas’ “Adopts” Social Worker to Aid Abused Children

St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church last Sunday joined Covenant to Care for Children’s Adopt a Social Worker (AASW) program. AASW matches faith communities partner with a Connecticut child protective social worker to address unmet needs of area children who are abused, neglected or severely impoverished. Participating social workers volunteer their time to communicate the needs of children on their case loads, and the congregations do their best to fill those needs.

According to the West Central Illinois Drug Task Force, 18 children were found living in homes with a meth lab last year in Adams County. So far this year, authorities have found six kids in this dangerous environment. “Adams County is one of those areas in our state that continues to see problems stemming from methamphetamine production,” Dr. Kate Sheridan with the Illinois State University School of Social Work said.
