NASW South Carolina Chapter part of coalition protesting higher utility bills

The National Association of Social Workers South Carolina Chapter is part of a “Stop the Blank Check” coalition that is seeking to stop the SCE&G utility company from raising consumer rates by three percent to pay for two new nuclear power plants.

Chapter Executive Director Carla Damron took part in a press conference to protest the rate increase, according to this WISTV.com Channel 10 news segment. Damron said rate increases especially hurt people and families who are low income, making it more difficult for them to afford housing and more likely to become homeless.

“We do not need to burden the most vulnerable of our citizens because of these cost overruns and we don’t need to giveĀ  a blank check to SCE&G,” Damron said.

Social workers provide a variety of services, including doing community and political activities to help the most vulnerable in our society. To learn more visit the National Association of Social Workers “Help Starts Here” consumer website.
