NASW Communications Network Advisory Committee: Jenna Mehnert

Jenna Mehnert

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-PA) is the largest professional social work organization in the Commonwealth with more than 6,000 members. Ms. Jenna Mehnert, MSW, serves as the agency’s Executive Director.

Since assuming her leadership position at NASW-PA, Mehnert has led the agency’s successful efforts to create title protection for degreed social workers.   HB 1693 passed the Pennsylvania General Assembly on July 4, 2008, and was enacted into law on Sept. 8, 2008.  That same year, NASW-PA also secured passage of HB 1177 allowing licensed clinical social workers to be reimbursed by Highmark insurance company.

Mehnert has also testified before the House and Senate on numerous pieces of legislation to build stronger system to serve on vulnerable citizens. A committed advocate,  Mehnert has worked to ensure that the social work voice is present on numerous statewide committees including the Welfare Coalition, the Protect Our Children Committee, and the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) work group.

Mehnert brings extensive experience to the position including her most recent work as executive policy specialist with Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.  Prior to her time in Pennsylvania, Mehnert worked for the offices of the mayor in both New York City and Washington, D.C.; as director of program management and development in the New York City Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator; and as chief of staff for the Washington D.C.Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice.

She has also worked in a variety of direct service settings including as a child welfare worker and rape crisis hotline supervisor. For the past four years, Mehnert has taught social policy and juvenile justice courses at both the Temple Harrisburg’s Social Work program and at Penn State’s Capitol Campus. She earned her MSW from the University of Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers strives to enhance the professional growth and development of social workers, to create and maintain professional social work standards, and to advance sound social policies.  NASW-PA members perform a variety of clinical, academic and administrative functions across the commonwealth.
