They Should Have Listened to the Social Worker

A social worker in 1974 warned that mentally challenged workers were being exploited at Henry’s Turkey Service poultry plant in Iowa, according to this article on All Headline News.

However the plant, which is owned by Hill Country Farms in Texas, was not closed and the workers rescued until a fire marshall found unsafe conditions there in 2009, the article said.

The company paid mentally challenged men $65 a month, well below minimum wage, and subjected them to verbal and physical abuse. Although the unnamed social worker warned of problems at the plant, the full scope of abuses was not revealed until two years ago, the article said.
