Social worker Kristi Slavin is suing the Orlando Magic for using a photo of her cheering at a game in advertisements, including on a bus, thisĀ Orlando Sentinel article said.

Slavin said the team profited from her image and that she suffered embarrassment from friends, family and co-workers who asked why are image was all over town. Slavin, who works with mentally ill and homeless clients, is seeking in excess of $15,000 in damages, the statutory limit for a civil claim.

A legal expert said Slavin likely will not win. She is not a public figure who depends on her image for her livelihood.

And the Orlando Magic have a policy printed on the back of their tickets that said they can use images of fans who attend games. By buying the ticket Slaving gave the team that right, the expert said.

  1. Seriously now, and beside the fact that this individual is a social worker, what does this have to do with social work? It seems to me that there are a growing number of such posts here that really have nothing to do with the practice of our profesion and may in fact be presenting us in a rather unattractive light. This one sues for $15,000 in damages over her image appearing on an add? Another gets a ticket for letting her 2y/o pee on a lamp post on a busy urban street? Common: if we’re gonna post such accounts lets at least have a paragraph on how this is perhaps demonstrative of something from our Code of Ethics or professional practice. Otherwise “Social Work Speaks” become the digital manifestation of a rural small town newspaper from the early 20th century telling us neighborhood gossip. (Frankly, I’d be more offended by the FOX affiliation than anything…..)
