Social Workers: Check Media for Accuracy!

Melanie Snyder of Birmingham, Mich., sent an email to SocialWorkersSpeak.org’s Media Watch urging other social workers check news reports for accuracy. She said Detroit News and Detroit Free Press articles sometimes do not correctly identify the training and/or licensing of people identified as social workers.

“I for one have grown weary of the generic title of social work for anyone who works in the field. I regret to say that the Detroit News/Free Press has not posted corrections regarding the training/licensing of individuals who are portrayed in less than favorable light and given the title of social work. I encourage all of us to check the credentials and ensure that our profesion is not maligned by those who are not properly trained.”

Q: What can social workers do to ensure social work titles are accurate in news and television reports?
