The evening meal sometimes is the hardest one to handle emotionally, said [Maggie] Terry, a clinical social worker. “The trouble with dinner … is that’s really the lonely time for people,” Terry said. Despite that, she advised people to still set a table and sit at it for dinner, even if it’s in another room in which they’re used to dining. If the quiet is too much to bear, a person eating alone can read a newspaper or watch television, Terry said. And just because a person lives alone doesn’t mean he or she has to eat alone.

Some prefer to be called entertainers; others refer to themselves as exotic dancers, but not Elle Stanger. “I like the term stripper,” Stanger said. She’s been stripping for about six years now. She loves what she does but says recent allegations of sex trafficking at Stars Cabaret in Beaverton came as a harsh reminder of the lack of protections many dancers have. So she decided to do something about it. She teamed up with the National Association of Social Workers, and testified before lawmakers in Salem. She detailed some of the poor working conditions many entertainers are subjected to.
