Half of them are unemployed, and the other half are underemployed, based on the kinds of jobs they should be able to hold, given their intellectual skills. Many of them still live at home, dependent on their families for day-to-day support. City officials gathered Wednesday to take a stand against domestic violence, part of a wider campaign to raise awareness about Domestic Violence during the month of October. Los Angeles Police Department officers, Mayor Garcetti and community advocates gathered in City Hall. Garcetti said it was time to “step up, to stand up, to act up, and to take action” in regard to domestic violence. A lecturer from USC’s School of Social Work, Susan Hess, was among those honored at the press conference. Hess helped develop a project that uses brain science to better recognize the effects of domestic violence trauma.
