More Women Coming Out of the Closet Later in Life

As society becomes more accepting of homosexuals, more women are coming out as lesbians later in life, according to this article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The article features National Association of Social Workers member Joanne Fleisher MSW LCSW in Philadelphia.

Fleisher treats women who come out in their 30s and 40s and has a Web site, lavendervisions.com.

The article also mentions Nancy Edwards, 67, who came out as a lesbian after two marriages. Edwards did her dissertation for the University of Minnesota School of Social Work  on women who made the same transition.

“I got sober, and thought maybe my feelings for other women was from drinking too much,” Edwards  said. “What the drinking was really about was keeping those feelings under wraps.”

Social workers are committed to equal treatment for all, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people. To learn more, click here to visit the NASW Diversity and Equity Web page.

  1. This is a great article! I love thinking that women coming out later in life are finding greater acceptance.

I am a professional writer and have a novel out about a married mom with three grown children who falls in love with her best female friend. It’s getting great reviews and is called Seeking Sara Summers. The main character must find this acceptance within herself.

No matter what age you are, I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to live an authentic life. May we all have this courage. May we all find this courage.

  2. This is a really admirable piece of work – thank you, Joanne and Nancy! Social workers united for equality!
