L.A. County Sheriff Wants Deputies to Oversee Parolees

Sheriff Lee Baca

In an unprecedented move, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca wants sheriff’s deputies to supervise parolees, a job usually done by social workers, according to this Los Angeles Times article.

Q: Is anyone following this issue? How are social workers in California responding?

  1. As a student currently pursuing a double major in criminal justice and social work this would make no sense. It would be like having corrections officers do police work. They may work with the same type of people and do some of the same type of duties but corrections officers and police do not have the same training. With my limited yet growing understanding of the dynamics involved with service providing, in addition to the complexity of an always increasing cultural diversity sheriffs lack the skill set and the interpersonal skills required to truly “work with” individuals. Social workers possess the knowledge and skill set required for such tasks.
