National Association of Social Workers member Ryan Suenaga, 44, died from a fall on April 24 while hiking on Hawaii’s Mt. Olomana trail, according to this article in the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

Suenaga, MSW, was a respected and admired member of Hawaii’s social work community. He worked full-time as a social worker for Kaiser Permanente and was a part-time educator at Parents Inc., an organization that helps families overcome child abuse and neglect.

Suenaga also organized basketball tournaments and dinners and used Twitter to update more than 2,000 fans about his life, including his struggles with diabetes.

“He has a very unique style, a very easy way of getting to know the clients, gaining their trust and respect and getting through to them,” said Lisa Groulx, Parent’s Inc. executive director.
