Social worker Ron Henke died at home in Diamond Springs, Calif., after suffering from bone marrow cancer, according to this obituary in the Mountain Democrat.

Henke, 78, was the first child protective services worker in El Dorado County and spearheaded several programs to benefit young children. He also won the Mountain Democrat’s Spirit of El Dorado award in 1993 and other honors.

Henke was inspired to help children when he served in the Navy during the Korean War and saw how babies and children suffered in the world.

“After seeing so many children begging for food and love, Ron decided to spend his life serving ‘the least of these,’ the little children,” said his wife, Doris.

Henke is survived by his wife of 54 years, two sons and a daughter, and two grandchildren. SocialWorkersSpeak.org would like to extend its sympathies to his family.
