  1. I totally agree that poverty is created & has a ‘purpose’ … Review The Conflict Theory or research it. The Conflict Theory discusses three levels in society. Upper Class, Middle Class & Lower Class (ie poverty). The Lower Class is discussed in detail & explained as to their ‘purpose’.

Let us just theorize how society can alter this. Basis of poverty is lack of … As social workers, we fully know and understand–even often discuss–the visions we see daily for this tragedy. It is changeable … BUT those in the powerful positions to change it, well, is change in their own interest.

Sadly, this all comes down to money & value systems. The ‘purpose’ for which Lower Class people have been designated is all with reason … so can be changed but only if changes are made.

I really doubt, as a social worker, that this will occur in my lifetime. Sorry to sound negative but those who benefit most from poverty have no plans to change their “win-win” situation anytime soon.

    Thanks for your time.

Gina P. P.: Of course, we all can and it begans with the elite 1% who controls all the wealth.

Gloria H.M.: Or the other 99% demanding change. We can start by changing our consumption habits, which would make a significant difference

Kjanadenise L.: Hmmmm, interesting @ Gina & Gloria. I would like to add that we should change our idea or create other images about the picture of wealth. There are some people who actually think that they can buy their way into wealth, by consuming and indulging in as many material trappings as their money will (or will not) allow.

  7. From the NASW Facebook Page:

Sheila B. M.: Wasnt there some conclusion made that was someting to the affect that if you taxed the top 10% of the rich 10% it would feed and clothe all the needy in the world?

    and…

Agree, Kjanadenise, we define wealth as having assets but thats not really the case.

  8. From Social Workers Speak! Facebook Page:

Kristin S.: Of course we can end poverty…but that would also require SHARING. Everyone has value. Imagine a world where every human was allowed to share their personal gift. No one would be without, as we all have something to offer of value.

Ernest W.: Kristin, I couldn’t agree with you more!! So many answers to mankind’s problems are rooted in greater humanity, having respect for everyone, compassion, empathy and sharing. In reality, we all are brothers and sisters of the human race. Our commonalities are so far greater than our differences. Yet, there seems to be an eternal negative preoccupation with our difference, rather than a celebration of them. Thanks for starting off this thread with a comment so on point! :o )
